A large, convex tower shield approximately four feet tall and two and a half feet wide, composed predominantly of Masyt and white hued wood. The shield’s surface, once highly polished, has developed an uneven patina of soft grays and silvers, giving it a muted, satin-like finish. Gentle abrasions and shallow scratches crisscross its face, smoothed by time into faint, irregular patterns. Dominating the central portion of the shield is a detailed relief carving of a wolf-like beast with an elongated, regal visage. The creature’s head is turned slightly upward, muzzle extended, jaws partially open to reveal finely incised teeth. Its snout tapers elegantly, leading toward nostrils set beneath sharply defined lines. Deep-set eyes, rendered through meticulously carved depressions, stare forward, their once sharply defined pupils now faint from wear. Above these eyes, carved brows arch gracefully backward into the creature’s prominent forehead, leading seamlessly into the wild mane that cascades downwards. The fur of the beast, meticulously etched in intricate, overlapping strokes, radiates outward from its face, covering nearly half the shield’s surface. Each strand of fur was originally carved with great precision; now, these details are slightly rounded, smoothed into softer curves and subtle, undulating textures from repeated handling and the gradual accumulation of minute abrasions. The fur’s portrayal is dense yet orderly, flowing symmetrically downward and outward, culminating in curved ends that imply gentle movement or wind-swept motion. Surrounding the main figure, carefully incised geometric and organic line patterns emerge, representing stylized roots and branches arranged in a harmonious, fractal-like symmetry. These branching motifs extend outward, encircling the beast and transitioning into a narrow, intricately etched border that runs along the shield’s perimeter. Each individual branch and root has delicate inner lines, subtly grooved and worn, creating an impression of layered complexity and aged depth. The shield’s rim is defined by a slightly raised and rounded edge approximately two inches wide. This rim has shallow, evenly spaced indentations that mark places where impacts have reshaped its form. On the reverse side of the shield, metal fittings form the grip and strapping mechanism, shaped from darkened, polished leather bound by metal brackets. The leather straps are wide, robust, and exhibit fine cracks along their surface, revealing inner layers that have frayed slightly at their edges. Despite evident wear, these fittings remain secure and functional. The central handle is wrapped tightly in a layer of pale, worn leather, darkened in places where grip has been most frequent. Positioned centrally behind the embossed beast’s head, a small, circular indentation is present, likely once holding an additional decorative insert now absent, its edges smoothed by gentle corrosion.
