Story 1: Tuna

It was a rainy evening when Sky Gray discovered that they were out of cat food. Meowmeow would not be happy if she received no food tonight. The wind, however, did not seem to be willing to accommodate their supposedly quiet, slow evening. As the clock approached Meowmeow’s dinner time, the lack of smell or sound of that oh so delicious tuna can appearing and being opened concerned her. Meowmeow pawed at Sky’s feet, and the owner cooed; even with their abilities with most things, tinkering with the weather is one of the things Specials were taught to avoid. Instead, Sky reached for the Normie’s weapon of choice… the UMBRELLA!

It is on these days that Sky is most thankful for the only-3-minute-away convenience store near their apartment building. Gathering their things, Sky prepares themselves and flings open the door. By the time Sky actually reached the store, their raincoat was drenched despite the umbrella, if that’s any indication of how strong the wind was. Soaking and dripping, Sky trudged through the chilling air-conditioned aisles seeking that which she sought. Grabbing 3 packages of the desired cat food, they begrudgingly dragged themselves to the cashier, whose thoughts were very loudly judging their decision to fight through this rain for 3 packages of tuna cans. Ignoring their impulse to say something snarky at the cashier, Sky pays and promptly leaves the store.

Meowmeow better behave for the next 3 months, thought Sky, as they made their way slowly back to the apartment. As they approached the building, they watched as a delivery man carried a box to the apartment next door, grumbling in his thoughts how pointless it seemed that someone would order tuna online when a perfectly good supermarket lay only minutes down the street. Sky gave the man a quick nod, their canned tunas hidden from view; they’ve learned since the very first day at The Academy that to be able to ignore people’s loud thoughts is to be a good Mind Reader.

After fighting the door closed, Sky sighs with relief, now safely within the safe confines of their apartment. Meowmeow, at the smell of canned tuna, leaps to Sky’s feet, and Sky is grateful that for whatever it’s worth, they’re not able to read a cat’s mind. Sky attempts to carefully open one of the tuna cans, but unsuccessfully fends off Meowmeow and ends up dropping it on the floor instead of into Meowmeow’s bowl. Thankfully, ungrateful cat as she was, Meowmeow still finished all the food clean, to Sky’s delight.
