Busy road tavern (1/?)

by Theudbard Bauer

Oh, everyone has scattered, I have no real memory of when was we last left, but Zahara is still here. Even after Altford and what came afterwards, me and Zahara walked together. Felix is coming too, the poor sod remembers me of my father sometimes, although he is a bit smarter and a lot more naïve.

When rain came on us as we tried to find jobs going south to the road, we already had a two new traveling buddies: Symon, whose worth seemed to lay on distracting and charming much better than Lancelot ever did, and a pint of a person, a short woman - Sari. The halfling is quiet, but still quite perceptive and of likes much as the likes of other short people.

Sigmud seemed to have quiet the plan for us, as we stumbled on the only tavern in sight. A graven... Of all the retched things and all the nice treasure we could imagine, we find a Noblewoman and her entourage. Best is she left as soon for upstairs as we arrived, giving some breathing and planning time. And some rather deep pocketed friends...

One of those was another halfling maiden, whose name I didn't quite catch, whom herself was a fan of a card game. Easy money, I thought, and Zahara agreed as we played the maiden... Only for her to play us. All my silver shillings gone, almost half of Zahara's following. The poor indeed get poorer as the times go.

Between stealing or money back and finding something to steal, I remind myself of a ring we found among the Mutants on the road for Altford, the piece, however, is a insurance I have no intention of departing for so little. In my thinking, I end up staying at the table as the girls leave for better company. At the stools, Felix has been talking to the barkeeper and Symon, true to his abilities, starts talking to the short fiend that has our money. Almost caught the money on her belt, but I ain't stupid, there were guards from the noblewoman still on the tavern and I like all my fingers where they are.

Zahara finds her place among the guards and another tall fella with a match of arm wrestling. I remain on my own as people keep on finding this place a decent shelter from the storm outside. Morr's people, of all the things, with their coffin and weird feels. Don't like those. Some secluded hooded fellows came too, soaked as they could ever be. Couldn't even see their pouches under so much cloth. A drunken couple arrived soon after, loud and singing. And a cut of my cloth, a fella from the same path of life of mine, short and weird, but stealth and talkative. Better to keep my distant, but also keep an eye.

Night went on, the giant from the noble's entourage was called and returned later, not much of a stealth fella, gotta say. Apparently he would be the noble's champion for a trial down in town a few days from now and she wanted him rested and whole. He looked the part, at least, could beat Zahara in arm wrestling in the blink of an eye.

Late it was, and people were retiring. Symon went up the stairs at some point, with his new halfling friend and my shillings. Another woman came from the rain, strong and buff, she was quiet, but had the heart to play some wrestling with the giant - Bruno, the name - before joining in with the bigger in conversation. One of the crowd went face down on one of the table, drunks am I right? Stupid as he was, it got me a few shillings to be worth the effort.

Night was moving slow, but that was only because I didn't know what was to come.
