So we’re in Bannon’s channel close to saltmarsh port - in the doldrums - no wind worth speaking of. Everyone’s feeling glum with the fog, right. So naturally I’m organising a singsong for tonight. Perk the guys up a bit. See if we can get old Namey drunk enough to sing one of those gnomish whistling songs. Anything to keep them off the idea of an extra grog ration, ‘cos we don’t have that kind of klink right now. And Victor’s debt isn’t going anywhere fast. Well, we aren’t either.

Then I hear the sounds of trebuchets. There’s only one power above the Azure Sea that uses those - dwarves. Saw them from afar a few times during training exercises with the Aquamarines. Not that I wanted to get any closer - those behemoths are like floating citadels.

Well, next thing I know, I see one up close. That is, the bloody great ship goes flying through the air right over our head and smashes down like a piece of jetsom. And then it starts raining men (and flying horses - except this one was going down like a lead sinker) and then suddenly there’s a pile of undead calamari off the port bow.

Another look, and I realise someone’s RIDING this thing. I thought I was the first person to joyride an octopus, but apparently I’m wrong. So there’s this grey, flakey guy in a human military outfit…. And he’s got reins on the damn thing! Oh, and did I mention the kraken’s wearing armour… made out of ships? This son of a goblin shark has armoured his kraken? It’s too damn much.

Then Jagsy has the GENIUS idea to latch on to this other ship - some trumped up human military thing - that the kraken seems to be flailing at. Well, it’s going way faster than us (note to self - need more ship’s mages when we hit the doldrums) and it seems like the best thing to do. And it works too - here we are zipping along, picking up speed …. only it kind of takes the mast with it.

Victor is not going to be happy.

Not happy at all...

******
Well, we’re making good time for a ship with no mast - zipping along into Saltmarsh. It’ll be good to see Ambassador Coppalochs again. And odd to see those slimy streets and the little market. Not that I’m keen to go back to the place. Last time I arrived there I was bleeding from ten places. And Victor was half dead. Not the small half, either.

But, my mom always said you can get a long way with a smile and some friendly words. And Illissi will provide. At least, I hope so...
