Lookout

"The winds carry both adventure and danger, and it is my watchful eye that ensures our safety and leads us towards our destination. I am the lookout, and from the crow's nest, I see all that lies ahead." Elwin "Farsight" Tims, Chief Lookout aboard the Twilight Dream
The lookout is the pirate who spends their time on the top sail all day. By nature it is a solitary position and one that requires constant focus but they are an invaluable member of any pirate crew protecting the ship from danger and always on the watch for potential targets. The best lookouts have high Dexterity or Constitution scores and proficiency with the Acrobatics and Insight skills.

Features

Role Proficiency: The lookout can add their proficiency bonus to skill checks made to spot approaching hazards, other ships, or land in the open sky or maintain their footing while on the ship. If the lookout is already proficient in the requisite skill to make the check, their proficiency bonus is doubled for that check. The check cannot benefit from more than one feature (such as Expertise) that doubles the proficiency bonus.   Through wind and weather: When you accept this role at tier 1, your time in the crow's nest being exposed to the elements has made you exceptionally durable. You also become proficient with the Survival skill and can use your Dexterity or Constitution modifier in place of Wisdom for this skill.   First Contact: Additionally at tier 1, when you are manning your position in the crow's nest you may choose to add your proficiency modifier to the initiative roll. Also, when you make this roll you can't be surprised, and creatures you don't see don't gain advantage on attack roll against you. Once you use this role feature, you can’t use it again until you complete a long rest.   Luck of the top man: Starting at tier 2, if the ship performs an exploration task and the result is a minor boon, you can choose to make an additional exploration roll (Survival) to discover a major boon instead. If you do, you can’t use this role feature again for 30 days.   Rig Monkey: Additionally at tier 2, you have become adept at maintaining your balance even when not on board your ship and as a result have a very low center of gravity. This produces the following effects.

  • When you are prone, standing up uses only 5 feet of your movement.
  • Climbing doesn’t cost you extra movement.
  • You can make a running long jump or a running high jump after moving only 5 feet on foot, rather than 10 feet.
From the top rope: Starting at tier 3, your experince climbing the rigging has given you greater confidence to board enemy ships. Whenever fail a check to board an opposing ship you may choose to reroll the check. You must keep the new roll, even if it’s lower. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again for seven days.   Eagle Eyes: At tier 3, you have become attuned to watching the movement of enemy crew on the deck of a ship and can predict the timing of attacks. Whenever you are manning the crow's nest you can make a DC15 Insight check. On success your ship gains +2 AC to avoid attacks until your next turn. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you complete a long rest.   Top man's constitution: Beginning at tier 4, your time in the crow's nest has left your more durable than ever. You gain resistance to cold, fire, lightning and thunder damage.   Down the sights: Also at tier 4, you can use your high vantage point to assist the weapon crews in aiming at their targets. Until the start of your next turn all ship attacks may add an additional d6 to their attack rolls. If the crew are incapcited or deafened they do not hear your commands and recieve this bonus. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you complete a long rest.
