The foundation of each pauldron consists of a dense weave of tightly linked chainmail, crafted from small, uniform rings, each no wider than a fingertip, subtly flattened along their circumferences. Each ring has been individually riveted shut, resulting in a sturdy mesh with slight flexibility. The links maintain a consistent finish of subdued silvery-gray, bearing faint hammering marks only visible upon close scrutiny. Overlaying the chainmail foundation are segmented ḧuntāld plates arranged in orderly horizontal bands, each plate expertly shaped to contour the natural slope of the shoulder. These plates display a gentle curvature that seamlessly mirrors the anatomical line from collarbone outward and downward. Each band overlaps the one beneath it by precisely half an inch, forming subtle ridges where the layers intersect, allowing the pauldron to move fluidly with the shoulder's motions while ensuring continuous protection. An alignment of rivets, each small, domed, and flush with the plate surface, is placed at perfectly equal intervals. These rivets secure each metal plate to a supple leather backing of subtly faded off-white, the edges of which are faintly visible beneath the overlapping metal. The leather backing is finely textured, evidence of repeated wear gently marking its surface with subtle creases and slight discoloration along the edges. At the uppermost point of each pauldron, a slightly thicker plate curves inward, providing additional reinforcement to the vulnerable junction where the armor meets the shoulder joint. This topmost piece tapers gradually toward the neck, its edge smoothly beveled to eliminate any sharp points or corners. The inner edge of this plate is reinforced with a narrow band of ḧuntāld, precisely formed to rest comfortably against the padded gambeson or underlying garment. At the bottom, the pauldrons flare outward gently, forming a slightly raised lip that extends a fraction beyond the chainmail beneath, channeling impacts outward. The pauldrons attach securely to the wearer via a series of leather straps. These straps, thick yet pliable, connect discreetly to ḧuntāld fasteners embedded within the armor, carefully riveted and reinforced at points of tension. Each strap features evenly spaced punched holes, their edges meticulously rounded to prevent fraying or tearing with repeated use. Securing these straps are slender, oblong ḧuntāld buckles with a matte finish, each bearing subtle markings of gentle wear. The interior lining of the pauldrons consists of padded, quilted linen, dyed a muted cream shade that has slightly faded with prolonged use. The stitching of the linen is even and precise, forming triangular quilting that evenly distributes pressure across the shoulder.
