Past Whispers
Keilana was born in 3278 as a member of the Raevhern family to Father Deranyth and mother Velarah. The family was one of the prestigious elven families, known as nobility throughout the elven lands and was renowned for their grand masteries within the arcane arts. The Elven Council anointed her father and mother as Grand Battle Mages prior to the Great Genstanalt Battles against the Elven Empire in 2985. The whole family played major roles in the stability of the empire until the dark cataclysm ravaged the elven city of Yehlune in 3280.
The Dark Cataclysm was an event that was shrouded in mystery and removed from the history books. When the event is talked about, it is often mentioned as a natural disaster or in religious sects a sign from the elven god Larethian. The elven clerics believe that events such as these occur as a sign to people that the elven magics should be more carefully enforced in order to keep divine balance.
Regarthein the eldest sibling of the Raevhern family had never lived up to her parents high expectations. In her adolescence she grew a thirst for power in order to prove herself to her parents and eventually fulfill the families legacy. This craving to advance her skills so quickly led her to consider shortcuts in her training.
One day she overheard two of the arcane scholars talking about the forbidden archives, her curiosity peaked and she began to shadow various nobility in a attempt to learn more . She was not complacent enough with what she considered mundane magic's and was misguided enough to consider sneaking into the archives. The achieves where quite well hidden and secured from most of the populace, but she knew that she could use her cunning and standing within the nobility to formulate a plan in order to gain access. She followed through and eventually stole an ancient outlawed tome of a hybrid form of necromancy. These dark arts involved harvesting elven souls and combining them with a incantation in order to summon more impressive creatures. This practice was so empowering and soon became an addiction to her, which spiraled out of control.
A few months later, when she had gained enough skill at the incarnation ritual and gathered enough regent souls that she managed to summon Jerroek the great serpent demon. A beast that was far more powerful than she had imagined, except this time she had no control over it. This realization led her to frantically reverse her incantations before others realised her mistake. The rest of the family sensed this massive power draw during the initial incantation and managed to intervene early on. A great battle took place in order to vanquish the beast, the city guard and local battle mage took arms in order to prevent total destruction of the city.
After 8 hours of battle the beast was finally slain, the final blow made by Deranyth Raevhern who lived only another hour before his mortal wounds took him. It was a shallow victory that only served to prevent the total destruction of the once great city of Yehlune and the possible extinction of the elven race. The whole family had perished in the disaster and few were left to tell the tale. Thousands died and three quarters of the city was left in ruins.
During the aftermath of the battle the remaining city guard performed searches for the living. One of the guard uncannily found the two year old infant Keilana, who lay crying but unscathed in the charred remnants of the Raevhern family home. She was the only remaining family member and was soon adopted by Bringale Vyshaan, one of the noblemen that knew the family. He raised her as he knew Deranyth would have had wanted.
Bringale and other elven nobility knew the truth of what happened and using their influence they managed to organise plans in order to keep the truth of the cataclysm a secret. It was essential for the secrecy of this heinous event in order to sustain the mage guild standing within the elven council and in turn protect the legendary status of the Raevhern family.
Arcane Beginnings
Keilana grew up not knowing anything of her past, and living in a similar environment as her sibling Regarthein once did. In 3288 Keilana had noticed an uncanny ability to perform basic cantrips and decided to undergo her mage training at the Yehlune Mage School. Mid way through her training at the school she began having surreal dreams of a distant worlds with fantastical creatures. During her studies she began summoning small insects from these worlds and soon began to realise that these dreams were her senses waking up to the other worlds that existed alongside her own.
The Elven Council watched her progress within the school and soon realised she had potential for something far more important than a simple battlemage. For over 400 years, they had been running a underground guild of elven mages named the Shadow Void. This guild was designed to achieve morally grey objectives that were essential to the councils plans. They mixed a fine blend of military and arcane training which allowed the council flexibility to deploy tasks in which the mages guild and militia could not achieve alone.
Members would consists of the most elite mages that undergo rigorous training in order to not only excel at various magics but to also harden there mental willpower and discipline them to perform the actions required to achieve the objectives given to them without comprise.
She was the perfect candidate, plus no one knew of her past bloodline, she was forcibly placed in the initiates group. At first Keilana hesitated to comply with the mandatory transfer, she felt her freedoms where being taken from her and grew to resent her new mentors. The Training she underwent in the next five years shaped her view on the world, she started performing quests and realised that the betterment of the guild would in turn not only strengthen the elven alliance but also be a ideal profession to advance her arcane potential. Her childhood ethics taught to her from her kind hearted foster parents where slowly beaten out of her. She realised how dark the world around her truly was, this realisation slowly transformed her arcane summons. The once summoned singing fae from her past life where replaced with screaming harpies.
She soon found her dreams focus on only one world plane. This hell torn fiery chasm she would travel to every night. Each time she would strangely feel at ease being there, the bubbling flow of molten lava soon became soothing to hear, similar to a babbling brook. The daemonic creatures overtime excepted her presence and she would often play games with them like the animals back in Yehlune. Her perception of the world became vivid and she became infatuated by its wonders. She often wondered which world she truly belonged in, sometimes to the point of confusion, not knowing which she was sleeping in.
Overtime she began to feel drawn to explore a certain region of the world. There she met an intelligent bipedal creature. She began to feel a strong connection to him, and felt that she could communicate and feel what it was thinking just by staring into its eyes. This bond allowed her to naturally learn the worlds language and his name Kharinok. Her studies soon allowed her to bring the creature to her world and they began a new relationship adventuring together.
For the Greater Good
During the later stages of her initiate trials within the guild Keilana and the other initiates were put under great stress, in order to test their resolve and moral decisions were constantly forced upon them, in order to determine their devotion. The Shadow Void needed to test Keilana’s loyalty so the masters issued the quest to bring them the head of her father. She had a conflict in her heart between the opportunity awaiting her in the guild and the aging old noble she had once called father. She confronted Bringale with tears running down her cheeks, but unwavering determination in her face and thrusted a blade up into his chest. She smiled triumphantly. Her battle woven mind had organised a victory against her past emotions and her mental conflict which felt like an eternity was over.
She pushed him aside and he slumped in a pile on the ground. She knelt down knowing her only course of action was to take a clean swing at his neck. She gripped him by his hair and raised his body at arms length while readying her blade behind her. The old man coughed attempting to clear his throat, the curiosity was overwhelming and she indulged herself in listening to his last words. He struggled to breathe, and faintly whispered “I’m not your father, you are the true heir to the Raevhern family”. She was stunned, and gritted her teeth unsure what to believe, but knew that any more hesitation would be considered weak. She took the swing and returned with the head, ensuring her position within the guild. She was ready to begin her first real quest outside of the kingdom with a fierce sense of determination, knowing the quest would act as a final test her for the initiates. She left on her voyage to new lands with an uneasy feeling of confusion and intrigue at the back of her mind over her own origins.
The Shadow Void Masters would be requiring some of the rare Kroxite in order to research the magic properties it possesses, which has often been harnessed in the enchanting process. They issued five initiates the challenge of each bringing back 20Kg of Kroxite, by any means necessary. Each initiate has been scattered in different directions in order to optimise the search radius for the rare gem.
